Chemistry at AUA

Chemistry at AUA is designed to be interesting and relevant to your medical studies. We hope you will enjoy the course in its own right and not just as a precursor to your medical studies. The course, along with other pre-basic science courses will train you in scientific methodology and rigour and all the things we teach you will be useful as you progress through the stages of your medical degree.

Faculty

Janet Ashby, Ph.D
Assistant Professor General Chemisty

Dr Ashby studied chemistry at Leicester University UK and De Montfort University, Leicester UK. She obtained a PhD in analytical chemistry after developing methods for the very low level analysis of tri-butyl tin compounds. She has been teaching in Antigua for 15 years, previously at the Antigua State College where she taught advanced level chemistry and undergraduate courses for the University of the West Indies.

Joel Gillis
Laboratory Technician

Mr Gillis trained in laboratory technology at Government Technical Institute Guyana, Guyana Mining Enterprise and the University of Guyana. He was a quality control technician for two years and research and development supervisor for the Research and Development Laboratory at Guyana Mining Enterprise for ten years. He spent two years in the Mahaica Mahaicony Abary Agricultural Development Authority in Guyana, as a Senior Lab Tech responsible for Environmental Monitoring And Control, The Management Of Soil, and The Monitoring Of The Quality Of Irrigation Water within the project area. He also functioned as a Senior Lab Tech, for eighteen years, at the Antigua State College where he was responsible for preparing all Chemistry practicals and managing the Science Block.

Elton Isaacs
Tutorial assistant

Mr Isaacs is a graduate of the University of Guyana where he graduated with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. He gained a certificate of education from the University of the West Indies. He teaches chemistry at Ottos Comprehensive School in Antigua, biochemistry and organic chemistry in the University of the West Indies Undergraduate Department at the Antigua State College and in the School of Nursing and Pharmacy Departments at the Antigua State College.
